Marking & Scoring Question Marking Writing responses are assessed by certified IELTS examiners. All IELTS examiners hold relevant teaching qualifications and are recruited following the IELTS high standard criteria. Each task is assessed independently. The assessment of Task 2 carries more weight in marking than Task 1. Scores are reported in whole and half bands. Detailed performance descriptions have been developed which describe written performance at the nine IELTS bands. Question Scoring Examiners award a band score for each of four criterion areas: Task Achievement for Task 1 Task Response for Task 2: Coherence and Cohesion Lexical Resource Grammatical Range and Accuracy The four criteria are equally weighted. Assessment Criteria Task Achievement for Task 1 Assessment Criteria This assesses how appropriately, accurately and relevantly your responses fulfills the requirements set out in the task, using the minimum of 150 words. It is important to • Include an overview • Include all the important features • And support all the important features with data/numbers/examples from the graph Assessment Criteria In both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training tests, Task 2 requires you to develop a position in relation to a given prompt in the form of a question or statement. Ideas should be supported by evidence, and examples may be drawn from your own experience. Remember to: • Address all parts of the task • Present a clear position/opinion • And include relevant and well supported main ideas Coherence and Cohesion (Task 1 & Task 2) This concerns overall clarify clarity and fluency: how you organize your response and link information together. Coherence refers to the linking of ideas through logical sequencing. Cohesion refers to appropriate use of cohesive devices: You need to • Logically organize information and ideas • Use a range if cohesive devices(linking words and phrases) • And present a clear topic within each paragraph. Lexical Resource This refers to the range of vocabulary used and its accuracy and appropriacy in terms of the specific task. Most of your vocabulary should be simple and accurate-you only need to include a few less common words/phrases to get a high score Grammatical Range & Accuracy (Task 1 & Task 2) This refer to the range and accurate use of grammar as manifested in your sentence writing. You need frequent error-free sentence to get a good score. It does not matter if these sentences are simple, as long as they are correct. Answering Techniques: • When planning, underline keywords and then place points or vocabulary under them to help you develop your answer. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every word.It is more important that you are aware of the topic and how it is developed in the text. • We recommend that you break down your time as follows:10 minutes to plan,15 minutes for Task 1,30 minutes for Task 2,5 minutes to check. Whatever time portions you choose, make sure you keep track, so you do not run out of time. • Task 1: Use vocabulary (formal or more informal) that is appropriate for the person you are writing to. • Task 2: Make sure you give your own view clearly and support it effectively. • Task 2: When using examples from your own experiences, try not to make it too personal. • Task 2: Ident your paragraphs or leave a line between them. Give structure to each paragraph with a topic sentence, transitions and supporting ideas. While paying attention to structure, it is more important to answer the question. • Leave time to proof read. Practice tests and writing exercises should help you understand what your weaknesses are, so you can keep an eye out for mistakes when you go back, and proof read your work. • Do not get stuck on making each sentence perfect because you have a limited amount of time. It is more important to present an overall strong response rather than have an incomplete paper of perfect sentences. Checklist for Writing: Assess your writing skills and learn how you can improve them. Rephrase the question: Locate the key points or highlighted words in the original question. Focusing on those important words, find synonyms that may replace the original words. Proofread: Look for the mistakes and double check the spelling, grammar. Create your own proof-reading checklist. Organize your Writing: Make sure you allocate some time for planning and generating ideas before you do the actual writing. This will help you organize your answer and respond to the task accurately. To achieved the highest band, try to use the complex sentences and various sentence structure. The Conditional Sentences and conjunctions help you to provide variety of sentences in your essay but remember you must have command and use them correctly and know there correct usage.
